Hormonal fluctuations can trigger temporary or diffuse hair loss. Changes in estrogen or progesterone levels, e.g., due to
menstrual cycle irregularities (such as after pregnancy, after discontinuing hormonal medications, or at the onset of menopause) or thyroid problems, affect the hair growth cycle. Typical is (evenly distributed) hair loss across the entire top of the head. Hair growth usually returns to normal once hormonal balance stabilizes. However, a transition to so-called chronic telogen effluvium (lasting longer than 6 months) is also possible. A medical examination to check hormone levels is recommended.
